Question:

Can automatic garage door open without spring?

I got the automatic garage door opener replaced a month ago. About a week ago the spring broke. I ended up removing the broken spring. At this point I have one spring working. The garage door still opens and closes automatically for me. What is the purpose of these springs and will the garage continue to open automatically if I don't fix the one spring?

Answer:

You must have a spring to open your garage door. If you can't open it it must have a broken spring. If so, its best to call a professional.
Tom, You need the springs. They keep the door stabilized & they help the automatic door opener to raise & lower the door.
Yeah it will work with one spring, but your system will become unbalanced and that spring will surely go out sooner than if you had two. I would get both replaced as soon as possible to avoid greater problems that will cost much more money to fix your door. Garage Door Tucson AZ - Garage Door Repair 1620 N. Another thing you need to do annually is go to Lowes/HD and go to the garage door aisle and get a can of garage door lube. I highly recommend. I had to replace a gear unit on my G-door. Buy it, put on a mask, spray it, and listen to how smoothly your G-door runs afterwards. But, yellow led on your G-door sensor, probably time to consult manual (hope you saved/filed). Or go where you bought and ask about yellow led. Good luck.
Depends on what type of springs you have. If you have tension springs (the long, stretchy, kind) the door will operate but it will try to twist in the tracks, eventually jamming the door. If you have torsion springs (the rolled up kind) it's another problem. Doors with two torsion springs will operate normally with only one spring but the second is there as a backup. If the springs are old, the one remaining operating spring may break under the new weight. I'd get it fixed if it was mine. You can replace the tension springs fairly easily but if they're torsion springs I'd have a professional do it.
