Question:

Can i hook up two computers with an ethernet cable and transfer data?

i have an old comp with no way to hook it up to my hdtv (monitor for current comp). can i network the two comps so i can get into both hard drive's inside my dead tower?

Answer:

That is possible, but you can only do it with a Crossover cable. Once you connect the two computers together with a Crossover cable, you will need to assign the IP Address manually, on both computers. Then, the two computers will be able to communicate.
the term dead tower whats dead on it? i see someone already told you that you could do the encloser with a usb. i would just take out the hard drives set them to slave ( look at HD for correct pin placement) and open my working computer and temporary hook them up and pull the data off. warning i want you to be sure that the dead tower is not dead due to a virus! if this is why it is dead then hooking up to you working computer is a bad idea. since you did not say why its dead it dose concern me a tad.
Yeah man, but you need a crossover cable. then, you do this: My Network Places, open Veiw Network Settings, double click Local Area Connection, click on Properties, highlight Internet Protocol, click Properties, change to use the following IP address, for IP Address use something like 192.168.1.10 on one and 192.168.1.11 on the other, make the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on both, and the gateway 192.168.1.1 on both. Click Ok all the way out.Open My Computer, if your have a hand on your Shared Documents folder just drag the files you want to move to this folder. If not right click on Shared Documents and click sharing and security. The first time I had to click a link that told it to go to shraing without running a wizzard, then check the box that says Share this folder on the network. Now move the files you want to transfer to the shared folder.Start, Control Panel, System, then Computer Name tab, verify that the workgroups are the same.Hook up your crossover cable(I'm asuming you are referring to a network crossover), and just in case reboot both machines(probably not nessasary). Now you should find each machine in your network neighborhood.
If it's a peecee then you will have difficulty. The computer will need setting up for the network and that is tricky without a monitor. If it was any other kind of computer you could hook up a null modem cable and use a serial console but that is one thing PCs simply can't do.
No, because you said the tower was dead. Put the hard drives in an external hard drive enclosure and connect it to the USB port, but the drives need to be jumpered to slave, not master. Then you can use then as extra removable hard drives. Did everyone miss the words dead Tower
