Question:

Can you rent scaffolding or something equivalent to paint above a staircase?

I have a converted attic bedroom and the part where the wall meets the ceiling over the stairs is unreachable without scaffolding. It's over stairs so you can't just put a ladder under it. I hired someone to paint it the current color, but I will probably need to re-paint it soon and I am hoping to be able to rent something that I can adjust the legs to put on stairs that I can paint it myself. Any advice would be helpful

Answer:

Go to your local rental place and get proper scaffolding. It is better to be safe and be able to comfortably reach the ceiling to paint that perfect line (I am anal about that too). If using scaffolding, then please ensure there is someone else at home while on it...safety first.
You can rent scaffolding at one of those rent-all places. If you yell them what you want to do, they will recommend what will be best for you. About 5 years ago, I bought one of those 16 foot folding/locking ladder scaffolds. I've used it (with a piece of plywood over the exposed rungs) to do the job you describe. The nice thing is that it's also been used for 50 other jobs around the house as well.

If you don't already have one, you should go out and buy a Lttle giant type lader. Almost any home center has them at reasonable prices. They come in several sizes and are user friendly. I am pro painter and come across stairs frequently. I am able to accomplish most jobs with my adjustable ladder. Many times it loks a lot more involved than it actually is. These ladders are real easy to use once you've tried them.
