A cleft pallet is caused when the the neural tube does not close completely. This is also what causes spina bifida and other birth defects. As another person mentioned, this is caused (in part) by a lack of folic acid in the first trimester of pregnancy.
It is simply when the roof of the mouth (palate) doesn't close fully while the baby is forming. A cleft lip is when the lip doesn't close. I have one. My mom didn't do drugs and there was no family history. So sometimes it just happens. It's a relatively common birth defect and is corrected by surgery.
Lack of folic acid in the first trimester can cause it. This is why it is important for ALL women of childbearing age who are sexually active to make sure they are getting enough of this vitamin, because even on birth control a person can get pregnant and by the time you know the birth defects might already be in place. But regardless there are other factors for cleft palate... that's just one I know about.
my husband was born with out a cleft pallet or his soft pallet and it was caused by his mom doing durgs and drinking and not taking care of herself when she was pregent. my husband thinks it was hereditary to. so when we got pregeant with our son we were worried about it but we told the doctor and ever month we had a ultersound to watch his mouth and nothing ever came up and when he was born two and half months ago he was he was fine. so if you are worried tell your doctor and they should check it ever month but my doctor probly did because of his father.
