Question:

changing lock on doors of home with joint ownership?

I share ownership of a home with my brother and i had a question concerning the locks on the doors. Me and my family live in the house and i live in Michigan. We have been having some problems with my brother snooping around and we're worried about him going into the house while we're gone and going through our personal things. I want to change the locks on the door so he can't get in but is it illegal to change the locks on the house without letting the other owner know? Could he get me in trouble for changing them without telling him first?

Answer:

Unless you have a lot af acreage (5-10 per horse), I would not touch this. That many horses will have your pasture down to dirt in a very short time. And unless the owners are willing to fence off sections and let it recover with rotated grazing, it can do a lot of damage. I would not even think about boarding a stud. This sounds really fishy to me. Like they are either trying to hide the horses, been kicked out of somewhere else, or are just not responsible owners. If the stud got out, and caused damage to another's property, or got in the road and got struck by a vehicle, you could be sued. Since it is your fence and pasture. And then the stud's owner's would most likely sue you also. I would tell them to look elsewhere. Good Luck.
Blaring alarms, like you said, they'll scare the criminals off and no one would be hurt. However if it's a silent alarm, the robbers could kill the people inside.
