Question:

chevy valve ajustment?

How do you ajust valves on a 1955 chevy 265 cu, in engine. I Believe they are hydralic valves.

Answer:

There are books at the library . ask around your local car clubs this can be done but it's going to take some doing .Motor manuals have the ins and outs. I would read up on it first , Did you mean hydraulic lifters. I used to have my heads done for me then just Replace and adjust the lifters.
my first engine in my 57 chevy sure miss that old thing still kicking myslf in the butt for letting it go. there are two adjustments hot and cold, is the engine running,if so just pull the valve cover off and with the engine running just adj the 5/8 bolt on the rocker to take the tapping out at the same time listen to the sound of the engine for over adjustment
Run the engine until it comes up to operating temp.Shut it off.Remove the valve covers.Turn the engine by hand until the timing mark comes to 0.Half of the valves are now closed and you can adjust these by first loosening the rocker adjusting nut,and then tighten until the rocker arm makes contact with the push rod(turn the push rod with your fingers-you will feel when this happens).Tighten the nut another full turn and move on to the next closed valve. When you have adjusted the first 8 lifters, turn the engine around until the timing mark comes to 0 again and you can adjust the rest. You'll be able to tell which valves are closed by rocking the rocker arms side to side(they'll be loose).Hope this helps-it's not as hard as it might sound and your motor will purr with the valves adjusted right!
