Call your landlord ask to have them replaced. BTW if he hasn't installed a CO2 detector as well he's out of compliance with the law; ask for one of them too. If he doesn't comply you can send him a certified letter stating that if he doesn't act within 30 days you will buy them yourself, send him a copy of the receipt, and deuct it from your rent. Give him a call first though, he'll probably hook you up.
I would stick to the rating system, if you aren't 18 you should probably avoid it for now. It can be pretty gory, and it's not suitable for teenagers under 18 because of nudity and language.
