Question:

Energy Saving - Space heater or central air?

I am wanting to save energy this winter with my heatAt night is when we run the heater the mostHowever, there are only my husband and I in one room and my daughter in anotherWould it be better to run a space heater (electric) in each room, rather than turn the heat on and warm up the whole house when we aren't even in there? Also, which way would you go, ceramic or electric space heaters?

Answer:

Build oneIf you can find a SIP (self insulating panel) you can cut it to fit over the stairyou might need to build up the sides with sme 2x6 to clear the stairs.
I got hit in the face with one of those once.ouch
Try flannel sheets, thermal curtains, and just keeping the central heat on at the minimum it takes to sleep comfortably since it would take more energy to reheat the whole house in the morning anyway.
Is No Best WayWith the Roof Frame Close to the opening it will take workBuilding one is easier said than doneThe amount of work and time it takes for what seems like such a little thing usually stops peopleHowever the Heating and Cooling Savings for a year may be a weeks wage so taking time for this is importantIt can be done lightweight with foam board insulation and a light weight frameUsing piano hinges you can even make a hinged cover that pivets swinging away from the opening if ya want to go all out.
