Question:

General price for a transmission replacement?

Today my 1994 Chevy g10 beauville van stopped working due to transmission problems. I took it to the shop on the corner that does some of our repair work, but we have been noticing them getting higher and higher with their prices, so here is my question:What is a general estimate to repair/replace the transmission in the van? They said between $1,400.00-$1,800.00, but they aren‘t doing any of the work, they are just sending it to a transmission shop.I‘m getting the feeling it may be cheaper in other places and it‘s just so much because they want to make money off of the referral. Anyone else think I should go somewhere else and try to see what they say? I can‘t move the van with it being messed up though so will the other shops be able to get a accurate estimate to give?Just ranting. Thanks for looking.

Answer:

That is the going rate. What independent shops do is make the money off the removal and installation, but subcontract out the actual rebuilding. Since you're paying the exact same price, I'd recommend taking it right to a reputable transmission shop. Unfortunately, some of the tranny shops are chain operations that just buy rebuild transmissions from major rebuilders. So look for a shop that's independent, does their own rebuilding and is a member of the trade association ATRA. Then you'll get a warranty that's good nationwide.
I'd almost bet that's a 700 R4 transmission. You should spend some time and call a few shops and ask for estimates. I hate to say this but many transmission repair shops are crooks. In this day and age though it's much easier to research a shop your thinking of using. Go online and see what people that did a review have to say. My son had a Ford Taurus that had transmission trouble. One shop told him it was shot and gave him an outrageous price for repair. I had him tow it to a friends shop and it turned out to be a 40 buck sensor. So it pays to check out a garage if possible. That said IF it does need a new transmission the price they gave you is about right. A garage that isn't a transmission shop isn't going to repair yours. They are going to pull it and put a rebuilt transmission in it.
yeah you can, just get the model, and ask at the bike shop, if they dont have it in stock, theyll order is for ya.
