Question:

Getting your lip pierced with a quartz retainer?

I've heard it's possible to do this. Will the retainers be noticeable since they have to be quite long? Can you remove the ball/screw at the end of the retainer so it's less visible? If you get your lip pierced with a quartz retainer, how long after you get it pierced can you switch it for a shorter one?

Answer:

the equation for quartz (because you forgot to include it) is SiO2. it has a molar mass of 64 g/mol. that means for every 64 grams of quartz, there are 6.02x10^23. the sample size is 3.20 g, so you take 3.20 and divide it by 64 and you have .05 moles. you then multiply 6.02x10^23 by .05 and get 3.01x10^22 molecules of quartz. because there are 2 oxygen atoms in each molecule, you end up with 6.02x10^22 atoms.
6.42x10^22 is the actual answer
First of all, you have to know that quartz is SiO2 Now, determine moles of quartz in 3.2g; the moles of oxygen will be double this, since each mole of quartz contains one mole of Si and two moles of O. Once you know the number of moles of O, you can multiply by 6.02 x 10^23 to get number of atoms of O in the sample
