Growing white button mushroom for first time. What is the best substitute for vermiculite else than perlite?

Answer:

get a bag of perlite (not vermiculite) and work it into the soil. (Lowe's)
just add some compost to the planting hole and then top dress the surrounding area with compost , too.... then mulch.... clay soil holds water and hydrangeas love their water.... they are water hogs.... clay soil is actually quite good for them and they have done well in my red clay for 15 years!... you will want to add some lime to keep your soil less acidic if you want the pink to not turn toward blue.... but the plant itself still needs a little acid to be happy, so it's a balance you must reach... just avoid any aluminum sulfate or other aluminums as they're what actually turn the flowers of the mophead hydrangea to blue....
