Question:

how are pallet expanders ?

I'm 14 and getting a pallet expander tomorrow. I do not handle pain very well and i'm so not looking foward to having a huge gap in my teeth going into highschool. Any tips for the pain or advice from personal experience ?

Answer:

i have had an expander before. yes it hurts the first week. you can't eat any crunchy hard foods. basically yogurt and water is your diet lol. Take alieve or advil. when i had it though, i nevr got a huge gap. but this girl in my school did. trust me if you do what they say it will be fast.
I have been given the expanders 3 months in the past. you will get used to it. in the beginning is tough to speak and you salivate plenty. Get the water jet to bathe the nutrition that get caught up there. you would be effective in a pair of week or 2.
You do get a gap between your teeth. It will be painful and food will get stuck easily in it. It gets better over time though. It stopped hurting after a week or two. I'm not going to lie though, it hurts.
palate expanders are not pleasant, but its not excruciating pain by any means. you most likely will not have a huge gap in your teeth... you probably wont even notice it. but i do recommend, about 1/2 hour before you have to adjust the width (which is usually daily) take some Tylenol or motrin to help with the pain... i usually got an instant headache.
