Question:

How can i get the wheel bearings out of the back wheel of my yamaha r6 2002 model?

Its a yamaha r6 2002 model and im trying to remove the back wheel bearings.I have pulled the oil seal off and the circlip but cant get any further. The bearings arnt moving when i tried to tap them out.Do i need to take the wheel to a dealer to press the bearings out with a special tool made for the job or is there a way to remove them on my own and how do you put the new ones back in? Any advise would be greatly appreciated as i need my bike for work and at the moment its in bits and cant put it back together until this is sorted.

Answer:

While rather long and drawn out, tex42 petty much explained how to get the old bearing out. Freezing the old bearing is certainly a way to get it in easier, but a warm hub warms up a cold bearing pretty quickly. An alternative method of driving in the new bearing is to gently tap round and round on the edges of the new bearing to get it started, them use a big socket the same OD as the bearing and strike it with a hammer. Or, use the old bearing, as long as the inner race doesn't extend past the outer race. After getting the new bearing started, lay the old bearing on top of the new one, lay a piece of steel or something solid on top of it and then drive it down. Whatever you do, don't forget to replace the spacer before putting in the new bearing on the other side.

The Sharp side faces Outward,,away from the bearing. Note the Condition of the Inner Bearing Spacer. Occasionally they'll get mushroomed a bit. They're Soft, crappy metal,,,,yet their Length is a Critical Dimension. If it appears to show any deformation around the ends,,,flaring, mushrooming,,,or any other signs of compression yielding,,,,thats NOT Good. It's very possibly now Shorter than spec'd. Which loads the bearings incorrectly.
Not sure about Yamaha but some BMW wheels must have wheels heated up to change berings.
