Question:

My car shakes when braking was told it is the wheel bearings can this be right?

I thought for sure it would be something with the brakes but Pep Boys says it is the wheel bearings that need to be replaced. Which would make some sense because it does shake above 60mph but I didn't think that had anything to do with stopping?

Answer:

if you hear a squealing or buzzing noise as you accelerate, or a grinding noise when you turn a corner then yes. Your hub and wheel bearing assembly is shot..
front brake rotors may need replacing and balance front wheels
Warped brake rotors
It can be the bearings, however, if it is only happening during braking, you may have warped brake disc/s. This is due to intense heat from braking then suddenly cooled, e.g. going through a small flood or large puddle.
Worn wheel bearings make a loud grinding noise long before it would cause the car to shake. They would have to be wearing in a weird way to cause that. The wheel bearings are more expensive to replace than the rotors. If you can feel the brake pedal pulsate when you lightly press it and your steering wheel shakes, then that would indicate warped rotors.
