Question:

How do I adjust the system pressure gauge on my boiler?

I have a Greenstar 12i system Worcester boiler. A few minutes ago the system pressure gauge dropped all the way to red 0 and I need to get it back to at least green 2. I was shown how to adjust it: the boiler comes with a key which you stick into a hole in the bottom of the boiler. Your supposed to push it up this hole and turn it, and it should bring the gauge up. However when I do it nothing is happening. I have spent a good 40 minutes trying to push and turn this key and the gauge isnt adjusting, its very worrying. What am i doing wrong? Should I switch the heating on for a bit and try when its warmed up?

Answer:

Get someone to give you instructions before you do anything to that boiler. Above all do not 'adjust' anything unless you know what you are doing. They try to 'idiot proof' them, but a mishandled steam boiler is a bomb. Information and user instructions can be found here: www.worcester-bosch .uk/homeowner/pr...
you don't need to adjust the pressure gauge, you need to top up the central heating circuit by adding cold water from the mains. If you look carefully, you should find a filler loop connected to the boiler (flexible hose leading from the cold water system to another pipe close to the boiler with a valve on it). Over time, water in the central heating system may leak out or be vented off for various reasons, and you need to top it up. You do this by opening the valve, which lets water into the system. Do this with the system cold and stop when you hit between 1.5 and 2 bar on the pressure gauge. Don't go poking around trying to adjust anything on the actual boiler. You just might kill us all.
if the pressure gauge isnt moving it can mean u have a major leak in ur system some where or the pressure relief valve may be stuck in open position. you seem to be filling it correctly u shoulg have a long plastic key which u put into the hole under your boiler and turn. refer to manufactures instructions in your boiler handbook.
