Question:

How many electrons does copper give to oxygen to form copper oxide. I just dont get how it all forms??

Hi I'm really confused because copper should have 1 as a valence electron. So when you mix it with oxygen which usually goes around as o2 wouldnt you need 2 copper atoms for each (it has a valence of 6) ?? Because I checked and it says theres only obe copper for each. WHY?????????? Please answer ASAP

Answer:

Copper shows variable valency. In Cu2O, Cu shows +1 valency, and in CuO, copper shows +2 oxidation state or valency. Oxygen, as you know has -2 valency
