Question:

How much for rear wheel bearings...?

To take it to a shop to be repaired...It's a 2003 Nissan Sentra GXE.The estimate he got was for $1000, but that seems like a lot of money. Does that sound about right?

Answer:

if you are mechanically inclined you could do it yourself for about 10% of that. Get a repair manual for your car and read the procedure.
The bearings are pressed in a hub and cost about $125 each. Should cost about $150 - $200 labor so total cost should be in the range of $400 to $500. That is good quality NAPA bearings and hubs.
I replaced the rear hub, which is the rear wheel bearing assembly, and I paid around $80.00 for it. I didn't think it was difficult and figure if you do your own brakes, you can do this. The hard part was getting the hub off the axle, and it what also took the longest time; not because the task was hard, the hub wouldn't come off easily. My car is also front wheel drive, your car shouldn't be much different if at all regardless the manufacturer.
wheel bearings r about 100 dollars each and about 100 to install...total job about 300 to 350..
Parts and labor will be in the area of around $450.00 plus tax...
