Question:

How much should I plan to spend on an office chair?

I'm a web consultant, and I spend many hours at my computer. At worst, I can spend 18 hours or more if I'm finishing up a large project. This is not part time work for me, it's all I do.Currently I have some chair from Staples that was like $125 and my back is killing me. After less than a year the cushion provides no support whatsoever... I just sink down to the plastic immediately.I'll consider spending whatever to get the right chair, I consider it a semi long term investment. I don't want to spend more than I have to though, so keep that in mind.

Answer:

Sometimes it is best to get the $50 chair with the thickest cushion. Then give that to a friend if it doesn't work out. Then move up the ladder. The $800 chairs can be wonderful but if it doesn't exactly fit your body, you wasted your money. You can never sit in the chair long-enuf in the store to know if it will work.
The first thing you dont want to do is listen to anyone that suggests Herman Miller is the greatest chair. They are $800+ and i just could never justify paying that much for something that you could find from a less known company with the same features. I would type in ergonomic chairs and branch out from there. Things that would help your back are: Adjustable lumbar support Adjustable arm height on chair Multi-tilter These are features that generally do not come standard on each chair but make a world of difference in being able to adjust to fit you as comfortable as possible. Check out the site below, they have alot of chairs and good information about them. Comparing the same chair at other stores they are generally less money for almost all that ive seen.
