Question:

How would I change the axle on the back wheel of a bike?

I bought a 1949 Bauer bicycle and I want to keep the original wheel but the back sproket is froze up and won‘t move. Know I know you can unscrew the axel but I do not know how. There‘s no bolt or anything.

Answer:

We are talking old German bike. I assume the freewheel is stuck, not the axle. That is, the sprocket does not spin freely in the reverse direction. Check to see, perhaps it is a Sachs? I believe Sachs either has 2 slots across from each other or 4 slots in a cross, as far as a freewheel tool. But that might be like 60s Sachs, maybe not 50s Sachs. Agree with above. If the parts are rare, save everything in a box and rebuild with semi-vintage components.
No idea what sort of rear hub your bicycle has. The problem is probably not the axle, the hub will need to be disassembled and overhauled. If there is internal damage to the hub, it may not even be possible to find necessary parts. The axle itself is only a threaded rod that goes through the hub, but the other parts, bearings, cones and races inside the hub may be unique to the hub. You start by finding out what make and type of hub you have, the company that made the bike did not make the hub. If the hub cannot be repaired, it will have to be replaced, and frankly it may not be feasible to replace the hub. 60 year old spokes will all have to be replaced as well leaving only the rim to be salvaged
dunno but i;d find out what this thing is worth, before spending a lot of time or money on it wle
