Question:

Windshield wipers are making the noise but not movinghelp!?

I have a 2002 mitsubishi galant. Yesterday it was raining really really hard and only one of my windshield wipers was working (the one on the drivers side). Then this morning both of them weren‘t moving, but it was making the noise it always does when they move (the click sound). I‘m not sure if the wiper motor needs to be replaced or if something else is wrongI would hate to pay $100 for a part if its not needed. Can someone help me please? 5 stars for good answer.

Answer:

It sounds like a part in the drive mechanism has broken, it may be just a small part called a split pin has come loose, or something inside the motor itself. Lift the hood and turn on the wipers to see just what parts are moving, that will give you a clue as to where the problem is. If the rod or bar joining the two sides is not moving, but you can see the shaft turning, then it is something simple to fix, just a small new part and a pair of pliers may fix it, but you may need a mechanic if you are not technically minded.
Some wiper arms are fastened to the shaft with a small nut. Make sure they are tight. If they are loose, run the motor a couple seconds and turn it off by its' own switch. Then put the blades where you want them to park and tighten the nuts.
