I have a 2005 toyota matrix and put an air intake in it.?

i put an air intake in it and the check engine light came on and i dont know how to turn it off i dont even know why it would come on? whats wrong with it?

Answer:

Newer cars like yours have automatic onboard computers that are in charge of changing the air/fuel mixtures in the engine to get the most efficient power and efficiency possible. It's a great system, but the main drawback is that when you do something like change the air intake system, the computer won't know that you did that and it will keep assuming that the original intake is still on the car. The result is that the amount of air it lets into the engine will change and the combustion will be too hot or too cold, and that will cause you check-engine light to come on. What you need to do is either take your car to a mechanic who has a computer to tune the onboard chip in your car, or you should get on a few Toyota forums (google toyota forum) and look around until you find some hot-shot tuner guys in your area who are willing to come out and show you how to tune your onboard chip for free. I would go with the second option, because there are so many knowledgable people out there that if you find one who has done a lot of good work to his own car, and is willing to help, it's basically just as safe as taking your car to a mechanic and having him tune it for a couple hundred bucks - only it's free! But anyway, yeah, you need to tune your ECU to compensate for the new air box.
