We'd bury it in wet sand for up to a week, then work it by beating it against a tree(but that's hair-off) edit I think the purpose of the wet sand was just to keep it from drying out too soonWhen we were kids we had to check the spots where the hides were buried, and if it was drying out, pour a coffee can of water thereThen when we dug up the hides, it was important to keep the hide moving ( alive, my uncle would say) as it was dryingSo you'd whack it on the tree, on the fence post, twirl it, spin it, snap it like a wet towel, just keep it moving.
