Not all the expanders are removable in fact for adults must be fixed. This type of expander are made of stainless steel so its very dificult to get rust. You must keep it clean with your tootbrush and maybe and antiseptical rinse.

Do you mean a jaw expander? Yeah, it can taste bad if you eat a lot of acidic foods or drink a lot of juice with oranges, grapefruit, lemon or limes. I would try to rinse with Lysterine and watch what you eat.
I had one about ten years ago. Doc didn't want to pull any teeth, instead wanted to make room. Mine was not removable, cemented in. I remember having that taste, but only with certain foods, liquids. If you think it is rusting, it shouldn't be. Go back to the orthodontist. Oh yeah be prepared for a big gap between your front teeth, had mine for months.
