Question:

If I smoke near the window (blowing smoke outside) what are the chances of the fire alarm setting off?

The fire alarm is in the room.

Answer:

A furnace that's improperly vented can give off carbon monoxide gas which is poisonous. Are the detectors old? They're only designed to last 10 yrs or so. I once had a problem with a detector going off for no apparent reason. Turns out there was a tiny spider that had made it's tiny web right across the sensors. Pesky little bugger.
I would be worried that you are having a carbon problem. !st change all batteries. If they still go off I would have the home tested for the carbon by a pro.
If you are unsureand all the back-up batteries have been replacedPlease go to Home Depot and buy a Carbon Monoxide detector and mount it next to the alarm that is going off for safetys sake. Any furnace especially older ones can mal-function and start emitting CO Better safe then sorry . 30 bucks is a good price for piece of mind..
I would suggest using diaper pins, rather than safety pins. They require a little more work to open, but the safety pins can burst pretty easily with an active toddler. Also, some clothing is harder to remove than others. My kids both wore overalls almost all the time until they were almost three years old, not really because they would strip down, but because neither of them a butt or hips, and pants would literally fall right off them if they weren't being held up. Also, you can try snap-crotch clothing, or clothing that fastens in the back.
