Question:

Is it better to disconnect the positive or negative cable to a car battery?

I am trying to keep my battery from dying overnight since i need a new door jamb switch b/c my interior lights will not go off.

Answer:

disconnect the positive, the negative is used as a ground for most electrical components. By removing the negative and not the positive you are sending power to parts that have no ground!!! - PL
Temporary remove the interior bulbs, or remove the positive cable
Two ways to solve the problem: Locate remove the fuse However that fuse is most likely to provide power to other components so not such a good idea. OR Pop the switch out of the door frame remove the negative wire from the switch. (usually black ) Wrap some electical tape around the terminal on the end of the wire put the switch back in place. Problem solved!!!
Just answering the first question. Always- disconnect- the(negative) cable first no if ans or butts. For no reason should the positive cable EVER be disconnected first. Nor should it be connected last EVER.
Always the negative, but make sure its free from any part of the body where you sit it. and the reason why its always the negative is because when removeing it and refitting it , it will not create a spark, like from the positive side, and can cause your battery to explode, if any battery gaz is around, most important. its a known fact that all qualified mechanics know.
