Question:

Is there a better way to use the exhaust heat from my new gas boiler ? I just switched from an oil fired?

boiler to gas .... and this one has a stainless steel exhaust. It still seems as though a lot of heat is wasted to the ouside air. I know the length of exhaust is normally limited but .... is there a way anyone has used this air to heat the home or at least the basement ???

Answer:

Most new gas boilers are so efficient that very little heat is lost through the chimney. Some even use a PVC plastic pipe for the exhaust. Try touching the exhaust to see how hot it is. You probably shouldn't try to capture any heat from the exhaust. It needs a certain amount of heat to work properly.
first you need to know the exhaust temperature of your new boiler. then you need to know the exhaust Dew point. only then can you determine if there is any capturable waste heat.
maybe. run the flu around the ceiling. then out of the house. have some fans blow air across the flu when it's hot. you want to be careful not to exhaust the fumes into the cellar, or wherever the tank is.
