Question:

Metal shavings in transmission pan??

What are some likely causes of metal shavings in the transmission pan of a 2002 Ford Taurus with 108,000 miles??Thanks for input.

Answer:

I usually find some metal shaving in trans pan. It's from the bushing and bearings and such getting worn down. A trans with 108K deserves to have a few shavings in there. It's a good idea to change fluid and flush screen about every 2 years or 30k miles or so. Transmissions also wear out eventually like engines do. Someday you will need to get it rebuilt.
Sign that the transmission may go out. I think it could be caused by the gears grinding from being slightly out of place but I'm not totally sure. Does the shifting ever slip or the car grind when you start it up? A little more info would be good to help narrow it down a bit I guess.
I suggest getting a repair manual for your car and it will give to step-by-step directions to change it. Any auto parts store has it.Your dad should be able to change it in 4 hours.
How much metal is in the transmission? a teaspoon or so of metal in the transmission fluid is not an issue. however metallic transmission fluid dying or dead transmission. All transmission's require a fluid change even the transmissions that are sealed for life need them. figure a cares warrenty is 3 years 36k miles so the transmission WILL last through that without a service. Is that good for it ? NO. change your transmission fluid around the 2 year mark use the correct transmission fluids for your car. Best of luck Ken's Master Auto Care, Salem , Utah
