Question:

Muffler or cold-air intake?

I have an 09 Honda Civic Coupe and I want to add something to it that would make it sound a little louder but not too loud. My fiancee suggested that I get a cold air intake instead of a muffler. Is this the best way to go?

Answer:

Personally, I wouldn't ride on a repaired tire for long. But, if you're tight on money, what the hell, eh?
When you only have two wheels under you, you have to make sure Both of them are in tip top shape, I would recommend getting a new one just for safety purposes
yes the cold air intake is better, but u will get more power out the muffler but it might make it too loud and it depends on what kind you get, cheap ones just make noise, or just get a short ram intake because it is safer, with a cold air intake there is a possibility of it sucking up water in the rain and trust me you dont want that
Your fiancee is a typical guy, and is an idiot. Your car HAS a cold air intake. Take him out, pop the hood, and show him. The intake leads away from the engine, where hot air is, towards the bumper, where cold air is. That's a cold air intake. So ask him why he's trying to get you to spend money on something you already have. More than likely, it's just something he's heard from all his friends, and instead of doing any research, he's just passing on bad information. Secondly, without a proper exhaust system, and engine to match it, a muffler will make the car sound obnoxious, not a little louder. It will sound like an angry bee. And rather than any respect at all, people will hate you for the sound. Depending on where you live, it might even be illegal.
As great as some of these answers are. They devieate from the point which is sound, not if your car already has a cold air intake or not. or which will make it faster. yes your car does already suck in cold air. but a cold air intake kit will give you a less restrictive system. The stock intakes are more favoured to quiet than to high flow. More air flow more power, even if the air temperature is the same. As for sound, a cold air intake will make a growl sound under the hood because there is no sound deadening chambers in the intake where there typically is with a stock system. the nice thing about sound for the intake is that you'll only hear it when you step on the gas. if your just cruising or at idle, you wont hear any difference from stock. only if your driving hard. it's a nice sound too. Well worth it in my opinion. If you want it to be louder all the time even at idle, then get a muffler. don't worry about a full exhaust because the muffler is what changes the sound so stay with the cheapest option. get a good quality muffler stay away from cherry bombs and glass packed mufflers, they will be much too loud.
