Question:

my floor makes creaking noises?

My bathroom floor in front of the sink makes horrible creaking noises when I stand there. There is no other way around not standing in that spot. What causes this and how can I stop it.

Answer:

You didn't mention what type of flooring you have. If it's wood flooring, look for the creaking to come from 2 boards rubbing together. Once you find them, try putting a little baby powder between the boards. This won't fix the problem, but it should lessen the noise. If it's linoleum or tile, then the creaking is coming from the subfloor and this won't help. Good luck, hope this helps.
get the wood replace in that area
Well hate to tell you this but the floor underneath could have water damage, especially if it just started happening. If its been there a while, it could have been the construction itself, it should have been laid with construction adhesive on each floor stud, and screwed down(screw not nails) if it is nailed down eventually the nails can work loose, then the squeeking you hear is the wood grinding up and down against the nail. if its not a 2nd floor or a finished basement you can go underneath, take a pry bar and try to get a distance of 1/4 between the subfloor and joist. take some construction adhesive and caulk it into the groove. you can then go and put some bricks or some kind of weight on the floor to press the joist and subfloor together, will take about 24 hours to set. or you can simply apply shims or a sister(nail a board against another) and that could help, but could create an uneven spot there.
If you are able to access this area under the floor, (basement) and you can identify the area that squeeks, run a bead of construction adhesive along each framing member in this area. Try to squirt as much as possible between the framing and the floor. This should quiet the floor for now. When you decide to replace the floor covering, run deck screws thru the floor into framing from above. This should quiet the floor completely.
The cause could be the moisture in the bathroom has made its way into the floor boards and the nails are loose, the way to quick fix it would be to screw down the floor where the creaking is until it stops. But depending on the floor covering this can be easy (with carpet) or difficult (vinyl or ceramic tile).
