Question:

Should I rebuild my transmission or should i get another?

I have a 1989 nissan maxima the transmission on it doesnt work when i press the gas it doesnt move foward . would it be best to buy a used transmission or just rebuild the one I have? im having trouble finding another transmission is it really necessary.

Answer:

That's your choice. A rebuild will probably around 1500 bucks for parts and labor. Paying someone to swap them will probably run about 4-500 for labor plus the transmission (guess would be 200 for a used one) and hope you got a good one. If you're talking about doing the labor yourself, and you have to ask, you don't have the knowledge or skills to properly rebuild it. In my opinion, it's always better to rebuild one than to put in a used one. Even if you bought a 'new' transmission, it's still rebuilt. New transmissions don't exist except when they come from the factory in a new car. If you rebuild a transmission, you essentially have a new transmission in the car that (providing it was done correctly) shouldn't give you any issues. Whereas a used one may. On a side note, did you bother to check the fluid? Extremely low fluid can cause that exact problem.
