Question:

Volkswagen suspension sounds?

I have a 2006 passat bought it with 66,000 miles. Everything is stock. I can clearly hear now only when i go over a bump or indentation in the road do I hear a weird sound which I believe is coming from my suspension system. Accurately describing the sound is difficult, but its like a crushing noise. Something like as if the suspension is compressing than decompressing too hard? I dont know. Any tips of what could be wrong? (this started before it was cold out too).

Answer:

ball joints on the end of the suspension arms are well known for trouble and grinding noises especially if the rubber boots have split
Volkswagen utilizes a floating strut design, wherein the top mount for the strut isn't actually secured like most other cars. This causes a higher probability of noise when the struts get bad, also has a knack for cracking the strut towers. Also, VW's are well known for having rear axle bushings go out. It's not truly an axle, more of a swing-arm like a bike, but the bushings go out and create loud noises as well.
