The term extended commercial banks -- at least, as used in the Philippines -- refers to universal banks authorized to offer a wider range of services including those previously reserved to investment houses, such as underwriting and securities dealing; elimination of all functional distinctions among thrift banks; reduction in differentiation among categories of banks and non-bank financial intermediaries authorized to perform quasi-banking functions (NBQBs); and increase in the powers andfunctions of NBQBs.
