what happens on the microscopic level that makes material transparent?

when we look at glass we see light that came from behind it and passed thru it. what makes things transparent?

I have a 68 coupe and I got it when i was 13. I still don't have it painted, but i'm 17 now so I've had a few years to look. I personally like the racing stripes: red with white stripes looks good, or a black and white, or black and silver.. hope this helps mustangs and fords magazine might give you some ideas
