Question:

What is a swaybar insulator and link, and a lower control bushing?

My car lease is up in 3 months and the service dept. says these are worn out. I really don‘t want to spend the money to fix these before I turn it in. Is my car unsafe or will it fall apart on the freeway?

Answer:

im not sure what a lower control bushing is but your swaybar link would be behind your tire. depending what they look like ranges from your car usually its just a straight metal bar. Its a cheap part probably about 12-15 dollars depending on your car. Very easy to fix but if the old bolts are on too tight then you will need some type of saw to cut the old one off.all around about a 15-20 minit job.
These are part of the suspension system, so if they have failed your car already has a safety issue. The parts are not expensive, and should be replaced before attempting to sell the car - or you must formally tell a potential new owner clearly of this known issue so there is no possible claim against you if they go round a corner and lose control. As it is a leased car you have to look at the terms of lease - the lessor may be responsible for major maintenance, or if you have a lower price lease you may find you are required to keep the car at a certain level or be charged for all work to return the car to an agreed standard on the completion of the lease. Better to deal with it, you may find the car is weaving a little now but you don't notice as the problem appears gradually over time. If you have a workshop manual it will clearly show the replacement procedure - this is a normal service action as these parts are expected to fail over time. The type of roads you drive on will greatly influence how quickly these parts wear too.
