Meteors are very fast and quick. They appear in a flash and disappear quickly. What it sounds like you're describing are satellites. One may have been the ISS. The one that brightened up quickly and faded may have been an Iridium flare. The ones that appeared to disappear would be objects moving into Earth's shadow. Of course, they could also have been meteors. On a clear dark night, one would expect to see a number of meteors if you spend itme looking up, even without a meteor shower occuring.
Heat and smoke would cause smoke detectors to fall if mounted with only adhesivecall your local city offices and ask what the current codes are for smoke detectors.
