Question:

What is the name of the rifle bullet with an empty tip?

Its not a hollow pointI believe it was a french round used in WW2It was either empty tip or filled with a light metal and upon impact it caused the bullet to yaw incredibly because of the weight dis balance.

Well it couldn't have been a hollow point if the round was used in World War IIUnder the 1899 Hague Convention hollow points and soft points cannot be used in international armed conflict, and doing so would be a war crime (war crime bad)I can't find any information that the French used such a roundNeither 8mm Lebel or 7.5x54 have any loading like you describedBUT although the French did not seem to have such a bullet, the British and Italians sure didBoth the British .303 MKVII and Italian 7.35x51 rounds had bullets with a lightweight (often aluminum) tipThese did tumble severely, and were legal under the Hague ConventionOf course with the introduction of infantry body armor such ammunition is much less usefulBut an interesting historical artifact!
