Question:

What is wrong with my transmission?

i have a 1997 jeep grand cherekee tsi 6 cyl 4.0 auto transmission with 192,000 miles and when it was working it would only shift after a while being at 6000 rpms and it would be hard to go to 3 gear but now it wont go unless you really slam down for a long time would it be i need a new transmission or is there something else i could do like change my filter and fluid?

Answer:

A general repair shop could probably tell you if your transmission is failing by removing the transmission pan and inspecting the fluid and debris they find in the pan. If you go to a shop that installs Jasper transmissions, then you could decide to have a new remanufactured transmission installed if they say yours is kaput. However, the cost will be about $2500. You'll get a full 3 year warranty (75,000 miles) and essentially a new transmission compared to a shop rebuild.
Fix a flat is mostly a temporary solution. If you ran into a nail then just go into any tire shop and they'll be able to help you. The cost usually runs between $15 to 20 with taxes included.
people wont agree with me but I have a ford van that had the same problem. out of money I drained some of the fluid out and replaced it with 20/50 motor oil to thicken it up. 10,000 mile now and going strong. you should replace fluid and filter first though as I would only do this as a last resort. I am not a mechanic just speak from what I have done in the past. and worked for me. I got the idea from used car dealers from '60 when they put saw dust in them to thicken it up to make it go longer. Good luck I hope this helps you out.
It sounds like you just need a new transmisson to be hones that many miles as it is. I would check the fluid level and make sure that you put atf+3 fluid in that. Try that drive it if your still having problems more than likey the valve body is messed up and it needs a rebuild or the bands are shot either way your looking at a transmisson.
Get a bottle of soap and water and spray the tire and look for bubbles to find the leak. If its the seal to rim i would use it. If its something else i would get it fixed due to the fact it will only get worse and strand you when your not ready. Then you will be saying i should of
