unless you have an Industrial sewing machine, I rather doubt you'll be able to sew this on a regular machine. Go to an furniture repair shop and ask if you might use there if the job is not to big. I did this and the guy was so nice it only took me a few minutes to sew my canvas.
Chances are the thread is much too big for the size of the needle. I'd use a #14/90 or #16/100 Jeans or sharp needle, and regular polyester sewing thread (dressmakers thread). Heavy thread can destroy the tension mechanism on the sewing machine, and regular thread is plenty strong enough unless you're making sails or planning on using it as a parachute (something I would not advise doing).
