Question:

Why won't my boiler stay on?

My boiler often turns itself off after a short while (can be anything from 5 mins to an hour). I have to adjust the pressure 3 or 4 times a day because it often goes down to 0. Sometimes it takes a few goes to turn on.I think it's a combi boiler (not sure) and it says Sabre on it.A repair man looked at it not long ago, but it didn't change, so is there anything I can do to make a difference?

Answer:

it is possible you need a new boiler do you regularly run out of gas as this could be your problem.
couple things come to mine,is the water pump operating or does it stop and this is why you have no pressure.how old is your boiler?, and what kind of ingnition system?,standing pilot(flame on) or spark type or hot surface? Also sound like flame sensor if the boiler a newer type.On flame sensor all you need to do is pull it out and clean the shaft(1/8 thicknessx2inchs)shaft stop sensing when it has a bulid up due too the gas.also check to see if any safetys have open,(high limt,flow,rollout..One other you might want to check is the flue outlet make sure it is clear and clean.
hippo 15 your noramlly pretty sharp, i cant believe you didnt call this one, it goes on and off because of the low water shut off as the pressure gets higher it willwork as it goes back down it shuts off. he has a pressure problem. may first guess would be the holding/pressure tank, on the bottom is a valve like a tire stem, push it in if water comes out its no good. if it doesnt then put atire gauge on it and read it 12- 17 lbs. in most cases is good.
It might be time to retire that dinosaur and get a new one. If it's fairly new then check the factory warranty on it. Can you do anything that would make a difference? YES. Especially if you have children or a family. What a mean is a defective boiler can be the difference between a family dieing in their sleep from poisonous gas inhalation over a defective boiler (assuming it's in the house) and being safe. I'm not saying you have to panic but there are a number of people that die yearly from that. If it's old then having it blow is another issue. It could flood your house and damage your possessions. The new ones coming our are those European block shape ones that make steam and you basically never run out of hot water. They're great and much safer. Do some research. i don't know your circumstances and not sure how accurate my assessment is but that is something you don't want to play around with if you're not sure about what you're doing.
