Stain is a penetrant, unlike paint, which is a coating and can be stripped. Since stain penetrates wood's surface, it's a daunting task to remove it entirely, like it would mean sanding forever to bare wood. It can be done, however it's far easier to just choose a new, darker stain to re-do your desk.
