Question:

12v 1700mA power supply?

I have a video mixer here which the power plug says 12v 300mA and i have a power supply which is 12v 1700mA. Will i be able to use this power supply or will it blow the video mixer up? Thanks

Answer:

You can use the power supply. The key is, it provides the correct voltage. The mixer will pull the amount of current that it needs. The power supply must have a equal or higher current rating than the mixer pulls.
The current is fine. 1700 mA 300 mA. I assume it is a wall wart you are using, and you want to use a wall wart that didn't come with the product. Check another two things: 1) AC or DC output? If the video mixer says DC you have to provide that. 2) Plug polarity. Some plug jacks are +ve on the inside, others on the outside. Make sure you have it right. It *probably* won't kill the mixer to flip the polarity, but it may not work.
The 12v 1.7amp power supply will work but be sure that 1. You need a 300ma fuse between the supply and load. 2. Make sure that the power supply is regulated and filtered. 3. Pay close attention to polarity
You have a power supply with about 5 times the power requirement of the mixer. You can very safely use that power supply, the mixer will only take the 300ma that is needs. The higher capability of the power supply is idling(not used). In actuality you can run 5 mixers !!!!!!
most likely it will blow a fuse or component, that big of a difference is a lot. most components can take 10 to 15 percent variance (they build them with some tollerence) but that's too much IMO
