I have a 1982 Prelude, and everytime I try to connect my battery, the 55 amp main fuse (located in the engine wall by the negative battery cable) blows. Any ideas? Did I get a battery that is too big for the car?
First is to make sure you have the cable hook up the right direction. Second you may have a short out of your main fuse box. If you capable disconnect all wire to your alternator, tape them off and reconnect you battery if the fuse not blow then replace the alternator, if it still blow then get help from a local mechanic.
Battery too big is not the problem. I am confused by the description of the fuse placement as I am not familiar with your particular auto but a typical installation would have the main fuse on the + side. Is it possible you are reversing the polarity by hooking + cable to the - of battery. Did this problem start with new battery?
I am an automotive electrical technician. The only time I see this is when you have an extremely large short, or an alternator or starter is internally shorted as well. Being this is on a 55a fuse, Id have to say this is not main fuse for the electrical system. Since you did not specify what the fuse operates, I can advise you to find what it provides power to and check those components. You can usually unplug one component at a time and reconnect the power and see if its working properly then. If still lacking any helpful information, please specify what the fuse powers.
