Question:

1987 licoln town car transmission?

how much would i be looking at for a new or used transmission?? and do those cars have lots of electrical problems like the 90‘s year models or are they ok??

Answer:

i have replaced them before most salvage yards would want $200 - $500 for a trans and should guarantee it. You will need to find someone to put it in some salvage yards will do that to which would be the best way to go. As far as electrical problems i have owned over twenty some Lincolns and i am not aware of electrical problems.
Locating a used salvage yard transmission shouldn't be difficult due to the fact that the same transmission was used in many other rear-wheel-drive Ford/Lincoln/Mercury products of that era. This would be the AOD transmission. It would be preferable to locate one that was used in a Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis/Town Car application of similar vintage, due to the fact that the shift accumulator springs and valve body configuration will be similar. Avoid getting one from a Police Interceptor Crown Victoria though, due to the fact that it has no 1st gear or Manual Low selection in those particular applications. Regarding electrical problems, there weren't many that were common on those vehicles due to the relative simiplicity of the Town Cars of that era compared to the '90 model year and up versions. Hope this helps.
Check the local junk yard, and see if you canfind one with low miles. That or it will be about $2,000.
