Question:

1990 Accord Transmission Problem?

Hi, I got the transmission replaced on my car. I had them put a used transmission in it. The car starts fine. But it does not go into any gear. It doesn‘t go into Reverse or Forward. Is there a connection problem? How is the motor connected to Transmission? And what is a Tranny?

Answer:

Maybe I'm being too simple, but is the fluid level correct? It has to be rechecked after the engine has been run once because the torque converter is filled with fluid by the pump.
The transmission in the1990 to 1993 are the same and they all have the same problem.1 problem is the torque converter and the other is the transmission control unit.with a bad torque converter the car would run for a few miles and then stop pulling the car acted like it was shifted into neutral and wouldn't go anymore.and the fix for that is to overhaul the transmission.I rebuilt so many that i still have nightmares about them.the next one is the transmission control unit.what happens to the control unit is that is that a capacitor and a resistor went bad and would cause the transmission to be stuck in 3rd gear.It would act like if you where driving a manual transmission and you started in 3rd gear every where you went.its very difficult to find a good used transmission for those year models and if you do find a used transmission they usually have very high mileage.another option is you can replace the transmission with a 94 to 97 accord transmission but you will need the flex plate (aka known as a flywheel).the 90 to 93 bolt pattern is different and the torque converter will not bolt up.also the there is a bracket that holds the shift cable to the transmission. The reason we did that at the dealer was because it was easier to find one of those transmissions with less mileage.the next thing would be to overhaul the transmission.if the engine starts there is no connection problem.the tranny is short for Transmission.the connection between the motor and the transmission are six 10mm bolts.good luck
