Question:

1992 ford explorer rear axle bearings?

i got a 1992 ford explorer and the axle bearing in the rear are gone out. but i dont know what i need to buy to replace it. im not sure if it takes an inner and outer like the front or does it just take one? please help

Answer:

better get a chilton repair manual. most axles have some sort of retainer in the differential. auto zone can be a great help if you get the parts there.
Just one bearing on each axle. Make sure to buy new axle seals, gear lube and a differential cover gasket. Sometimes the bearings are pressed onto the axle shaft. I'm not sure on the Explorer.
2002 Ford Explorer handling - ABS - 3.seventy 3:one million axle ratio - 4 disc brakes including 2 ventilated discs - Immobilizer - Fullsize metallic rim decrease than physique spare wheel - Wishbone front and rear suspension with stabilizer bar autonomous with coil springs
Please disregard the first two replies completely. The bearings are NOT pressed onto the axle shafts. They are seated into the ends of the axle tubes. After draining the fluid out of the differential you only need to remove the C-clips that hold the axles in the differential carrier. The axles then slide out. Hold the old bearing against the new bearing while tapping the new bearing in place. This is so you tap it into place evenly. Then tap the bearing seal into place. Re-insert the axle shaft and C-clip. You can get a new axle cover gasket from a parts store or you can use just a layer of black RTV on the cover (works just as well; I use this method). Fill the axle housing back up with fluid.
