1998 C280 catalytic converter rattling. Must entire exhaust system need to be replaced?

Answer:

No. In most cases the catalytic converter can be replaced alone. The old one can come off either by bolts holding it on to a flange at both ends. Or a muffler shop can cut it off and weld a new converter in its place.
If its electric and there isn't anyone there awake while you are sleeping, I wouldn't suggest to do it.
only if u wanna get hot-hot-hot. --what? and u being on fire? ur already on *fi-yah*, Egg. {*boil boil boil!!!!*} but really, i wouldnt. lol.
Yes the cat converter can be replaced separately. However, before you do so I would check to see if it is actually the culprit. Most commonly on Mercedes I have seen either the heat shields on the outside of the cat converter have come loose, usually from rust, or one or more of the rubber exhaust mounting brackets have snapped, which can allow the exhaust system to resonate a rattling sound as well.
A catalalytic converter can usually be replaced by itself,The new converter may come with a section of exhaust piping at both ends and connected to the rest of the exhaust system by removal of 4 flange bolts,(2 at each end). or a shop can cut it off and weld or clamp a new converter in its place. Your rattling is due to the honeycomb type mesh inside separating from the shell casing.
