90% of CAI(cold air intake) kits don't do anything more than a KN high flow reusable filter for your stock air box and sometimes do worse. The reasons are simple. First, a typical CAI will take in hot engine compartment air instead of the cool air from the opening in the fender area. Hot air under the hood is not exactly a good place to pull in air for something that's supposed to be a cold air system. Some kits have a token heat shield but it does nothing to keep the hot air from getting sucked in. Hot air hurts performance in a gasoline engine. Second, a lot of those kits are made with metal tubing which absorbs and transmits hot air to the incoming air charge. Plastic is ALWAYS a better choice for the intake tubes since it doesn't absorb anywhere as much heat as metal does. You need to find a CAI that has plastic construction and pulls in air from the fender if they make one for your year of Mustang. Otherwise, the increase gained from less restriction on a CAI will be nullified by the hot air it sucks in. This means you'll get no more improvement over a KN for your stock airbox and since that costs less it's the clear choice. Roush makes a nice kit for the 2005 and newer Mustangs but I don't know if they make one for the older ones.
