Can you adapt any other transmission to the 2.2l motor and drive train?
You will need longer brake hoses. And another steering arm on the steering box. I would also reverse the U clamps, buy new ones, and nuts.
If that car was originally available with the 2.2 litre motor and a different transmission option, then yes, you should be able to obtain a different type of transmission to fit your engine. If you decide to go through all this, I would go with a 5 speed manual, if that option existed. With a manual you will have more power, better gas mileage, and better longevity. Sure, the clutch will eventually wear out after about 100,000 miles, but that's way cheaper to fix than rebuilding an automatic every time.
