Question:

4 cylinder jeep lifting?

Ok I have a 98 jeep wrangler that I want to lift 3 to 4 inches but my dad is worried about it gettin even more under powered than it already is. I want to know how significantly it wold really strees or strain the engine to put a lift kit on and how much more power I would lose doing it

Answer:

The lift will not hurt it at all. What will hurt the power is the tire size. You can run a 33 tire with a 4 lift, but you will want to install 4:54 or 4:88 gears in both axles to make up for the power loss.
I had a 98 jeep wrangler 4cly with a 6 inch lift. with my 35's on it i did loose some power, but i had 4:11 gears also. I would lift it, but if your going to put bigger tires on it, just don't try to beat on it. Best of luck!
After you lift a Jeep add larger tires the Jeep owner should re-gear the axles to help compensate for the power loss. Why? Because the tires are now creating resistance making the engine work harder. A 4 cylinder w/manuel trans Jeep comes 4:10 gears Now by adding larger tires (33s for example) you will need lower gearing. 4:88 would work fine. How much power will you loose? I can't give you a percentage but you will loose the use of your overdrive gear (5th gear). Use these links do more research before jumping into a lift. Just like stereos, cars womennot all lifts are equal.
take out a BIG loan if you choose to go the dealer rout.
Check engine light by itself means nothing. Go to Autozone and get it scanned FREE. It would be one of dozens sensors or other problems. Good Luck.
