Depending on the age of you car, I would say to also look into any kind of rust that might be forming above the tank if you cant see anything directly from just looking underneath the car. I had a Honda CRX 1988 that I sold it because the Tank was rusted from above so every time i filled it up with more then 1/2 a tank it would spill. Long story short, I sold it to someone who thought they could restore it. Come to think of it. The bolts on the tank were so rusted that he said the frame had rust too and would be extremely difficult to fix because its like trying to add something to a bone to keep it from withering away when its decaying slowly due to cancer or some infestation of some sort. You can only prolong the process a bit but in the end you end up with nothing worth keeping around
A couple droplets of gas can be smelled easily, so I would start at the gas tank, check it out to see if you have a leak there,if you have a car that has the fuel pump in the gas tank your leak could be on top of the tank and in that case you won't be able to see it unless you ''drop'' the tank down and check it.Next would be the fuel lines from the tank to the top of the motor(carburator or fuel injection) most fuel injected motors have about 65lbs.of fuel pressure after the car is started, check around the intake of the motor after you have started the car and see if you have any leaks there. If you see ''liquid'' coming out of your exhaust, that is just condensation moisture and is common, pay no attention to it.Start the car and run it for 2-3 minutes, then shut it off and go around the car and see where the ''fume smell'' is the strongest and look in that area.I might be able to help more if I knew what make/year of car)As for the cost of repair, you should sit down with your local phone book and call repair shops and inquire as to the estimated cost of diagnosis and repair.
dont smoke around the car get it looked at today by a pro have them lift the car they know how to find it its verry dangrous to continue to drive
